The Virus

The Herpes Virus causes a human viral disease, which can remain silent for many years. There are two types of virus which are HHV1 and HHV2 (Human Herpes Virus 1-2) . HHV1 causes the cold sores and HHV2 is the cause of most of the genital herpes. The two types are ubiquitous (everywhere) and contagious.

The symptoms are very similar, like watery blisters, mucous membranes in the mouth, lips and genitals. Both types are neurotropic and neuroinvasive meaning they stay in the body by becoming latent and hiding from the immune system in the cell bodies of neurons. When infected, people tend to have a viral outbreak episode which later on becomes active and it’s transported to the skin, creating the sores.

HHV 1 and HHV 2 are virtually identical and they share 50% of their DNA, and none of them have cure, it can be controlled but not cured. Please note that it can be transmitted just by contact during the outbreak so it is very important to avoid having sex during the outbreak in order to prevent it from spreading it with your loved ones. It is possible that during outbreaks the sores won’t appear at all, or infecting another person does not have to be just in an outbreak this phase is called symptomatic shedding.

Since this can be transmitted during oral sex, it is believed that it can also be transmitted just by simple contact such as toilet seats, towel or hub tub. However, Genital herpes transmission rarely if ever at all takes place in these ways.

We can never discount the chance of getting the virus on those ways since the virus is known to thrive off the human host for short periods of time in warm moist environments. Once again, Genital herpes transmission rarely if ever at all is transmitted this way.
